I saw this series by Barnett Newman in 2000 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and I was completely blown away. At that time, it was still on display in a dimly lit room. I was there all by myself, I had travelled to Washington alone, and that meant there was nothing standing between me and this series. Seeing the image again now takes me right back to that moment.
