How Lucas Cranach the Elder
(1472-1553) must have enjoyed painting these lovely girls!
Any excuse to get them
naked; you call them Venus, Eve, Lucretia, Hera and Aphrodite, Diana, The Three
Graces...always in a religous and moral context. Venus he painted 39 times, Eve
35 times and Lucretia just as often.
In the series The Three
Graces one sees some of the same girls posing again and again. Fully aware of
their beauty they dare us on their little stage trying out different positions.
Did the girl on the right
come up with this pose herself, scratching her ankle or was it Lucas's
invention? We won't know, but how playful it looks!
Lucas must have experienced
the same joy I get when I capture one of my 'models in motion' and come up with
a never seen configuration.
