Diane Arbus
Aperture Monograph
1971
In 1972, I was a second
year student at the Royal Academy for Art and Design in 's-Hertogenbosch
and I found this book by Diane Arbus. Her photographs have opened my eyes.
There is a transcript of a conversation with students, 1 year before her death:
'…there’s a point
between what you want people to know about you and what you can’t help people
knowing about you.
And that has to do with
what I’ve always called the gap
between intention and effect. I mean if you scrutinize reality closely
enough, if in some way you really, really get to it, it becomes fantastic….'
