The Danish Painter Vilhelm Hammershøi
(1864–1916) lived from 1898 to 1909 in an apartment in Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen.
There he created some of his best works. In the rooms in this apartment Hammershøi
dedicated himself to painting interiors, windows and light, which he depicted
again and again. Silent sensitive works in grey and brown shades. One of the
paintings Hammershøi made during that period was ‘Open doors, interior
with a woman in a white chair’ (1900). In 2006 I painted an elaboration of this
work by ‘cleaning’ the room, removing the table and Hammerhoi’s wife. I also
exchanged the chair with my own chair.
