Anet van de Elzen / Louise Bourgeois

Louise Bourgeois
Portrait Louise Bourgeois
by Robert Mapplethorpe
1982, printed 1991
photograph, gelatine silver print on paper
37,5 x 37,4 cm

Louise Bourgeois - the photo of Robert Mapplethorpe really tells best why I admire her. Her life and work are interwoven, she is the work and the work is her. But of course it is actually a portrait, which again is in line with my work.
Anet van de Elzen, 2014

The work she produces does not stand for Anet van de Elzen. ‘It won't give you a glimpse of the identity of the artist', says one of the authors of this book, Brian Catling. The work stands for the viewer. There is nothing in between, not even Anet van de Elzen. In fact she goes one step further: she dissolves in her work. For her it is simply the natural thing to do. Everything Anet van de Elzen is not in daily life, she is in her work. ‘What it is not is an everyday thing'. You will recognize it as how you, the onlooker, experience her work. It is not an experience that can be shared with others; you can talk about it, perhaps, but you cannot share the other's feelings. Whatever you see has a different meaning than what another sees in it. You need to look for the significance of this work in yourself, not in the artist. When she talks about it, she talks about the manifestation of the image and how it came into being, about the physical form it has taken, but not about the effect it produces.

Albertina, Vienna

Albrecht Dürer is one of the biggest influencers in my life. His work is why I chose to become an artist. I admired the versatility in his art. His drawings and self portraits are from an indescribable beauty.
Even though my work stems from a completely different type of output, it is very much influenced by Albrecht Dürer.
When I saw the picture 'the Study of a Drapery' it was so refreshing to me despite the fact it’s from 1521. It inspired me so much that it created a totally new turning point in my work and transformed the types of artistic pieces I produce. From that moment on I stopped using traditional painting materials.

The first image above, coming from Jain religion, inspires me so much, it refers to most important questions in life, it connects microcosms and macrocosms. It is abstract and figurative, it tries to express the whole knowledge of the universe.
This image should be seen together with the statue of Bahubali, Shrvana Belgola, a monolith of 18 m height. Both are images of the Cosmic Man of Jain religion.

I am fascinated by histories and religions. I source my works in text, diagrams and images, often found in unfamiliar environments and try to connect them with daily life and own experiences.

Jai Llewellyn / William Turner

The first artwork I really 'experienced', face to face, was a Turner in The National Gallery, London. I was immediately struck by the paint. The expression and emotional content seemed to exceed any narrative and it was then I realised the potential power of painting. Many years later I found an affinity with Turner's watercolours and I often have to remind myself of their sensitivity and simplicity.

Moon and panorama of the insects, 'The Poet Prays to the Virgin for Help.'

I pray to the Divine Mother of God,
Heavenly Queen of all living things,
grant me the pure light of the little animals
who have a single letter in their vocabulary.
Animals without souls. Simple shapes.
Far from the despicable knowledge of the cat.
Far from the fictitious profundity of the owl.
Far from the sculptural wisdom of the horse.
Creatures love without eyes,
with a single sense of rippling infinity,
and who gather themselves together into great heaps
to be eaten up by the birds.
Grant me the single dimension
that little flat animals have
to tell of things covered with earth
beneath the shoe’s hard innocence.
Nobody weeps comprehending
the millions of tiny deaths at the market,
that Chinese multitude of beheaded onions,
that great yellow sun of old flattened fish.

You, Mother, ever terrible, whale of all the skies;
you, Mother, ever the joker, neighbor of the borrowed parsley:
you know I comprehend the world’s tiniest flesh
that I may give it voice.

Federico Garcia Lorca

Lutz Weidler / Donald Evans

Donald Evans

Donald Evans in Amsterdam

In the year 2005 - when I was already getting a little bit tired of making big installations and sculptures (transporting, storing and sometimes deconstructing them...) - a friend gave me this book: 'The world of Donald Evans' by Willy Eisenhart.
I had never heard of the artist Donald Evans before. He was an US-American, born in 1945 who came from New York to the Netherlands in the early 70's and died at the age of thirty-one in a fire in Amsterdam.

His artwork was inventing and painting nearly 4000 very small watercolour-paintings that look like stamps.
I was fascinated by the contrast of his very small equipment and the huge world he has created.
In 2007 I decided to start a series of small sculptures on ground plates 35 cm by 35 cm, a kind of 3-dimensional 'stamps', which led to a new found freedom and I am still working on it, counting about onehundredandfifty now...
